Slowly… very slowly, but we rode!

Upon the Wednes day of half term, Adam and Wozzer – who started this whole cycling thing – went for their first ride together in months! Any readers of Uncle Wozzers blog may be confused, wasn’t Wozzer off to the forest of Dean on that Wednesday? Well, we were, but Wozzers Dad has the ‘man flu’ – so we couldn’t go. Thus, i was up for doing sod all for a day, when my good friend Adam contacted me to see if i fancied a ride. Mainly i fancy girls, but a ride can be just as good.

So, we met up in out usual place. following our usual route up the wyche, it soon became clear how slow Adam was, having not cycled in aaages. But, as Adam does, he went slow but steady and kept going, realising that he’d never make it up some of the rockier bits he opted to walk, but fair enough. He kept up perfectly well along the lower ridge route (recently, Benni and Wozzer have been using the actual ridge for riding the length of the hills, so what was our ridge route is now the lower ridge rotue). From black hills, we turned back and came along the hills, After a few intersting path with leaves, we came to one of the many branches in the path. Adam noticed there was and up option – whichy is the normal route – and a down option, which he inquired into why not that way. My answer was, don’t know where it goes, and looks rather narrow. But, as an idiot on a bike, i decided we’d have a little explore!

We’re not doing that again! It was a very steep set of abou 8 or 9 hair pins, very clever Adam… anyway after swearing our way to the bottom, and pausing a while to make sure our braking fingers were still there, i realised we were on Holy Well Road. So off we trundled, along the road and crawled (Adam) our way up to the well. From here i dissuaded the use of the downward road route as it wou;d mean going anlong the busy hilly Wells Road. thus we hit the hills once more, the path was flat-ish and quite nice really. So Adam took his time, rattled along adimring the scenery, and as the good friend and leader i am i kept stopping and waiting for him.

After a few bouts of walking in Adams case, and pausing for the walking biker to catch up in Wozzers case, we rached the Wyche. From here Adam decended the wyche road, and cut across peachfeild to get home. I, on the other hand, decided to go through West Malvern – for no reason in particular. So, after rocketing through the narrow, often blocked-by-parked-cars roads, I rolled up to my house in good time before it went dark (i had lights anyway, but i decided to race the dusk home)

It was good to ride with Adam again, and hopefully he’ll join us for more weekend rides in the future and soon be racing along like the rest of us!

Until the next ride!

Indeed, the Red Riders are crawlign their way back! It’s an uphill struggle, but we can do hills like no other! That last ride help me realise, perhaps not the first time, just how much i love riding! That truimphant feeling when you get to the top; that heart pumping, leg aching struggle on the way up keeping you fit; the wind on your face as you descend; the memroires made on every ride… It’s all just fantastic!

Why did we ever stop? I, for one, am determined to keep going!

until the next ride!

Our much enjoyed RedRides have been practically non-existant!

I blame three things: grasstrack taking up Adams time; Ben’s work getting in the way; and Myself - I haven’t been a forceful leader. I should have organised as many rides as i could to keep us going.

However, all hope is not lost! Adam has expressed that he would like to go cycling more, and Benni is keen to keep riding. Therefore, i shall put my forceful leader foot in it and make sure we go riding as many weekends as we can. We all enjoy the riding, the company and the conversation. We all enjoy that feeling as you crest the hill, breathing heavily, sweating – but it’s worth it.

Therefore Next sunday, the Red Riders WILL be riding! (ben has work and adam has grasstrack)

Yep, i’m full of them!

Anyway, recently while looking at NCR 1 as it hits the Orkney islands, i thought “that’d be fun, even if we didn’t do any of the rest” (the route forms a pleasant looking loop round the island) and it occured to me – the British Isles have a fair amount of little (relativly) islands hanging around.

My idea is this: cycling holiday on a island.

Or maybe two, depending on size and proximity. Think about it, (assuming one of us can drive) we load bikes and luggage, drive to a ferry port, take the ferry across, stay in a B&B or camp or something, cycle around the island for a few days, then come home! We could even move onto another neighbouring island if we could / wanted. Perhaps we could even cycle to (and from) the ferry!

As always; comment, email, MSN, talk next time we meet

In the previous post, i mentioned two ideas for the red riders… Grizedale, and cycling the National Cycle Network…

I’ve done a little research into the national Cycle Network. And discovered that there are miles and miles of National Cycle Routes! In fact in August 2005, Sustrans (who manage the routes) reached the 10,000 mile mark! Yes, ten thousand miles of cycle route! And it’s not all on road, theres over 100miles of more offroad paths!

In my personal blog, i mentioned cycling on one such route in Whitby. This was NCR 1. So, my idea being to cycle one and work our way up in acending order, i looked at NCR 1. “NCR 1: Dover to Shetland Islands, along the east coast, via London, Edinburgh, John o’ Groats and the Orkney Islands” So if we were to cycle the enitre length of Route 1, we’d start south of england, on the coast and wind our way along the coast, in through london, up the east side of england, through scotland and end up north of scotlad on the Orkney islands. The enitre length of Britain!

So, we may want to do bits of Route at a time. Like do 30 / 40 miles in a weekend, and then again the next weekend, sort of thing. Or just do rides from town to town, using the routes, and reference to them in our write ups so people reading can follow our route!

All ideas spawning from the original, what do you all think?

Uncle Austin Wozzer

Forget ‘the boys’, Wozzers back in town!

Indeed I am! I’ve had fun on holiday, and cycled plenty! 81 miles in total! For further details visit my blog ( unclewozzer.wordpress.com ) as I can’t quite be bothered to type it up all over again!

If you do read my blog, I talk about how i’ve had some ideas. Ideas for the Red Riders!

One: Grizedale – fantastic cycling, thus perhaps worth another visit. I think if enough Red Riders club together we could rent a cottage or something for a week or less and have a bit of a cycling holiday! Two: in whitby I rode on a national cycle trail. This one was in the form of a dissused railway. And i thought perhaps, for a project or something, the Red Riders could try and ride all of the national Cycle Trails (not at same time) starting at NCT 1 and working our way up the numbers!

As always, comment, email or talk to me and let me know what you all think!

Indeed he is,

Our wonderful leader is off to the Lake district and then Whitby – with his bike! And while i’m sure you can all put two and two together i’m going to say it anyway, he’s dam sure to enjoy himself! Just imagine Wozzer going down the side of a very steep hill and pulling a turn extremly close to a lake, as normal then lol ;-)

So, another two and two moment here, Wozzers not going to be in malvern to go cycling! shock! BUT, this is no excuse for the other Red Riders not to do anything! Keep the Red’s riding, ride for the fun, ride for the sheer hell of riding, MB MRR!

Well, back around the 25th, see you then!

Uncle Austin Wozzer

Right,

Basically, the Red Riders haven’t done alot recently. A Levels and simalar have disrupted our rides, and the forming of the Red Racers has taken up time too. Hopefully, the Red Riders will keep riding! we need to get our weekend cycles going again, which should be easy during the holidays, hopefully we could do more over the holidays, but we’ll see.

In the meantime, Wozzer is (hopefully) soon going to be abl to have a go on a tandem!! It belongs to a friend, whom we’ll call Pika, and is VERY old. in fact, it’s so old the tyres have actually cured! (where the rubber goes hard and craked and awful) This will hopefully be next week/weekend

And, in other news ~ The lake district will soon feel the tread of a Red Rider! Uncle Wozzer is off to the aforementioned district for a holiday, and is taking his XTC4.5 too! Whitby will also be fortunate enough to experience Wozzer, as he’ll be there for the second week of his holiday!

Uncle Austin Wozzer

Dont worry, ure not in trouble, its just we need to talk about tomorrow.

Smatt might not come.
